Ball played college soccer for Southern Connecticut State. While at Southern Connecticut State, his team won the NCAA Division II Championship in his freshman and senior year while reaching the Final Four in all four years.
Ball made his debut for the Chicago Fire against the Dallas Burn, playing 90 minutes, on August 22, 1999. He scored his first and only MLS goal in the Western Conference Semifinals against the Dallas Burn on October 16, 1999.
In 2005, Ball signed with the Rochester Raging Rhinos of the USL-1.[1] Additions to the Rhinos midfield during 2008 saw Ball transition to a defensive role where he was a regular starter at right back. It had been announced on the team website just prior to the 2009 season that John Ball has signed a one-year deal with the Rhinos for 2009, where he is expected to continue his role in the back line.[2] Due to a near complete overhaul of the Rochester Rhinos prior to the 2010 season, John Ball was not re-signed by the team.
Ball played the amateur team CASL Elite in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2010; his team won their regional qualification group (which also featured NPSL teams FC Tulsa and Atlanta FC) before falling 4-2 to USL Second Division pro side Charleston Battery in the first round of tournament proper.[3]
Ball is a coach in the Cleveland, Ohio area, where he is expected to be named Girls' Technical Director at Orange High School in June, when his club coaching obligations end. The Lady Lions were a District Semifinalist in 2009 after winning just one match in 2008.
